WHAT? A 30 day creative residency with travel grant and per diems
WHEN? 19th July - 17th August 2024
WHERE? The Au Brana Centre, Gers, France
WHO? Performance practitioners and visual artists resident in EU (except France)
THEME? Attrition
DEADLINE? 28th April
This summer we invite artists and cultural professionals to develop their practice and research, hosted at the Au Brana Centre as part of the Culture Moves Europe residential scheme. Over 30 days, 5 artists from the performance and visual arts will exchange and create both collaboratively and individually in response to the theme of Attrition. Eligible participants will receive a grant to cover travel and per diems.
Attrition is the gradual wearing down of one element by another through friction and or force, for example land erosion or one’s native language through learning another. This residency invites A&CP’s to develop a shared process that considers the linguistic, physical, social and ecological implications of attrition and how this can be translated into a collaborative hybrid artistic work. With a focus on exchange of approaches, research and languages, artists from multiple disciplines and cultures will explore how and where their ideas converge, differ and cross pollinate and translate this into a shared artistic form for a local audience.
The project will explore new working strategies to incorporate different artistic forms. Attrition is not only a creative theme, but one that considers how different approaches and diverse ideas can rub up against one another. The thematic content allows artists to interrogate new modes of communication between languages and how we negotiate miscommunication, linguistic flexibility and problem solving without losing the specificity of accent, culture and identity.
The project will be mentored by Kate Papi, co founder of the Au Brana Centre and OBRA. Kate brings an experience of mentoring students, emerging artists and collaborating via performance and hybrid art forms with artists from different disciplines. She will establish a creative common ground through physical and written practices, and discussions in relation to the theme of attrition. As the artists continue working independently, Kate will instigate group feedback sessions and an ongoing evaluation process. She will ensure that the realisation of the shared creative output is collaboratively achieved and that each A&CP has a voice within the process. Kate will be the conduit between the participants, the host space and the local audience and facilitate an evaluation period post performance and post residency.
The residency will take place at Au Brana, a residential centre in rural South West France committed to supporting hybrid artistic practices that place research and collaboration at their core. Au Brana is a converted 300 year old farm which has been renovated into studio spaces and accommodation. The participating A&CP’s will have 24 hour access to the main studio (120m2) and a small studio (35m2), each are full of natural light with wooden floors and access to a sound system and basic lighting. The centre is situated in gardens with public woods nearby and surrounded by working farmland, 3 km from the medieval town of Lectoure. We work closely with local galleries and cultural institutions that can meet with the participants.
Au Brana has a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, and dormitory accommodation on site. The dormitory is divided into small alcoves for privacy and we provide storage space for each resident. We provide access to laundry facilities and all bedding and, when possible, vegetables from the centre’s garden.
Artists will be selected based upon their response to the proposed theme and their experience with creating collaboratively and through process led research. As we will accept up to 5 A&CP’s, this can be a mix of individuals and duos. We seek to create a group of artists from multiple performance/visual disciplines or those already exploring hybrid art forms. They should be artists for whom collaboration and exchange of practices is either part of their process or who seek to develop this area of their practice. As the theme also questions how native language is changed by speaking multiple languages, we are keen for there to be a mix of native languages spoken between participants.
